20 billion a year
This is needed to cover the estimated increase in consumption – from today's approximately 150 terawatt hours to around 235 terawatt hours in 2035. It is important to note that about half of today's production facilities – i.e. 75 terawatt hours – will need to be replaced when they are phased out during the period.
On top of the major investment in new power production, Svenska kraftnät sees a need for 150 kilometres of new power lines and about 30 new power stations, which will be built at the same time as 250 kilometres of lines and about 100 stations are "renewed" in the existing system.
To achieve this, grid investments must lift from today's approximately SEK 5 billion per year to perhaps SEK 20 billion per year until 2030, according to the ten-year plan.
"It's a very large increase," says Gustafsson.

Gustafsson does not believe that ordinary electricity customers will notice the sharp increase in investments in the main grid. The financing is done through network fees on the electricity bill, but to a large extent also through the so-called congestion fees – that is, the money Svenska kraftnät collects when they seize the price difference due to bottlenecks when electricity is transferred between different bidding areas.
